Recently we have been looking at where we are taking our little shop and what we wanted to bring all of our customers going forward. This led us down memory lane and back to the reasons we started Schudio Studio in the first place. This is something we haven’t shared with many people, but it is the foundation of what our shop stands for. So here it is! Our why!
In 2013 we started our textile brand Schudio. FINALLY! We had spoken of going into business together designing textiles since we met at university in 2004. I guess we were a little scared to give it a go. We didn’t know where to start, how to find all the information, how much it would cost and if people would even like our work or take us seriously. BUT, eventually we took the plunge. I mean you never know unless you try right? We knew we wanted to design fabric based on Kim’s original artworks and sew it into a range of products ourselves, we knew we wanted to use only Australian suppliers throughout our whole process and we wanted to be as environmentally responsible as possible. We knew there had to be a way to make quality products right here in Australia. What next?

Research! SO much research. We are not afraid of hard work so we got stuck into it. We researched everything from business structures to textile printing companies. We absorbed as much information as we could before we did anything. Then we signed up for an ABN and registered our business name, bought ourselves a domain name, designed and printed our first run of fabric. WE WERE HOOKED!
There is nothing like seeing something you dreamed of come to life. Seriously, when we received our first run of fabric we cried. We almost didn’t want to cut up the fabric for fear of destroying its beauty. But cut into that fabric we did and the outcome was even more amazing. A piece of Kim’s original artwork was there on a cushion, an actual product that someone would one day purchase and place in their home. Now what? How do we sell it?
To start with we sold mainly to family and friends; we created an ETSY account and signed up for a few markets. We had no idea what we were doing or what to expect but both of us learn best on the run so we jumped straight in. Soon we found ourselves on display in a design gallery in Noosa QLD and our products were for sale in a small store filled with handmade goodies in Mitchelton QLD. How did that even happen?

Fast forward to February 2016 and we were invited to participate in a RAW showcase in Brisbane QLD. We couldn’t believe it. The design and creative community was taking us seriously. They wanted us to showcase our work alongside other local artists and designers. We were terrified. We felt 100% underqualified for the honour but jumped in feet first. This was the kick in the butt we needed. By the end of the event we were so confident that we had a unique product that people actually wanted. The feedback we received from the design community on that night was out of this world!

We started to look for ways to expand our business, applying for high end designer markets, placing our products for sale in new stores and building our online presence. Then in June 2016 we were presented with another amazing opportunity. We had the chance to open our own shop!!! This was always in our 10 year business plan, we never expected for it to happen so quickly.
Our dream shop was a studio space where we could both be creating our products in view of the public. We loved the idea of showing people the process and the people behind our products. We also loved the idea of having our work on display alongside the work of other Australian small business owners who hand make their products. Australia has so much to offer and there is such an amazing creative community here right under our noses, we had to bring it to light.
So now, after even MORE research, we have evolved into a collective store and design studio in a beautiful shop front in Ipswich QLD. Our store is full to the brim with products from around Australia, with most of them coming from designers in the Ipswich community. You will find everything from children’s clothes, candles and skin care to jewellery, homewares and artwork, all of exceptional quality and all hand made here in Oz.

The first shop location, before we even had other artists stocked...it was just us.

So this is the direction that we are continuing to follow in the coming years. Quality, handmade, Australian products by creative designers and artists that you simply cannot find everywhere. Somehow, in the space of 5 years, we have gone from an idea with no experience, to running a successful store filled with amazing Australian creations. We will continue researching, evolving our own products, curating our store and bringing you handmade products that are unique and of high calibre.
All of this with a smile a few puns and possibly some happy dancing.
